The commission
Twelve weeks, three fittings.
A bespoke suit is a sequence of honest conversations between cloth and body. Weeks one to twelve, here is what actually happens.

The pattern
Thirty measurements, a long look at how you actually stand — nobody stands like a mannequin — and a paper pattern drafted for you alone. It stays in the archive for life.

The baste
The first fitting, in a jacket held together with white thread. It looks unfinished because it is — this is where the big decisions are still cheap.

The forward
Second fitting. The suit now mostly agrees with you; we argue with the last centimetres at the collar and the cuff, which is where suits are won.

The finish
Buttonholes sewn by hand — our slowest, proudest hour per hole — and the final fitting, which should feel like nothing at all. That's the point.

My father was measured here in 1974. They pulled his pattern from the archive while I stood in the doorway, and I understood the whole business in one gesture.
The baste fitting looked like a suit drawn in thread. Eight weeks later I wore the finished thing and my posture improved out of respect.
They talked me out of a cloth. Tailors who will lose a sale to win a suit are the only ones worth twelve weeks.
