Understory is a small, dark, humid shop of plants that reward attention — aroids, ferns, the odd and the slow. Every plant leaves with a handwritten card and our number for when the leaves do something strange.
The idea
We don't sell décor. We sell living things with preferences, and we'll tell you those preferences honestly before money changes hands — including 'this one will punish your dark hallway' and 'you already killed this species twice; try this instead.'
Every plant is grown on or quarantined here for a month before it hits the shelf. Nothing goes home with hitchhikers.

The shop
The shop runs warm and humid with the lights low — the plants prefer it, and honestly so does everyone else. Thursday evenings we run the repotting clinic: bring your struggling plant, we'll diagnose it at the bench, and you pay only for soil.
Half our stock is propagated in the back room from our own mother plants. Ask to see the bench; we're insufferably proud of it.
Plant sitting
Board your plants with us while you travel — watered on their schedule, not a schedule.
$25 per week, up to 5 plants
Your small collection lives on our benches, watered and watched by people who notice things early.
$60 per week, up to 20 plants
The full collection, including the difficult ones. We speak calathea, reluctantly but fluently.
$40 per visit
For plants too big or too settled to move — we come to them, keys held with embarrassing ceremony.
Plant people
They refused to sell me a maidenhair fern. Asked about my radiators and everything. Bought the fern they suggested instead — it's thriving and I'm weirdly grateful for the rejection.
Came to Thursday clinic with a dying monstera in a bike trailer. Left with a repotted monstera and three new friends. The plant lived. The friendships too.
Boarded twenty plants for a month. Came home to them looking better than when I left, plus a handwritten note about which one 'has been dramatic.' Accurate.

Half a level below the street — follow the humidity. Bring your struggling plant on a Thursday; bring your skepticism any day, it tends to leave in a nursery pot.
