Wine merchants — Lyon

Kept slow, poured young.

A small cellar of growers' wines — bottles we know by name, from people we visit every year.

A good bottle is a place. Pull the cork and you're standing in someone's October.

Thursdays

The counter opens at seven.

Every Thursday we open six bottles from one place and pour them side by side — a village, a slope, sometimes one stubborn family. No notes to take, no wrong answers.

Twelve seats around the counter. The evening costs what the bottles did.

What people carry home

I asked for 'something like the last one'. They remembered the last one. From February.

The Thursday tasting ruined supermarket wine for me, and I'm grateful.

The shop

Down the three steps.

We're the narrow door on Rue des Capucins — cellar-cool all year, which the wine likes and August visitors love. Come with a dish in mind or nothing at all; describing dinner is the best order form we know.
