Hands centering clay on a spinning pottery wheel in warm light

A pottery school in St Ives

Ugly first pots, proudly.

Eight wheels, six weeks, and a kiln that doesn't flatter anyone. You'll make something wonky, then something less wonky, then — around week four, usually on a Tuesday — something you'll quietly keep forever.

The six weeks

From lump to cupboard.

One evening a week, the same wheel, the same eight people. Here's honestly what each week looks like.

  1. Centering

The humbling week. You'll fight a spinning lump and lose, then — for three seconds — win. Everyone remembers their first three seconds.

  2. Pulling walls

Cylinders, mostly collapsing. We keep the best collapse on a shelf by the door as encouragement. It gets a surprising amount of affection.

  3. Bowls

The week the shape opens up and so does everyone. Conversation starts happening over the wheels. The bowls are still heavy. Nobody minds.

  4. The keeper

Somewhere this week you'll make the one. You'll know it when you cut it off the wheel. We'll pretend not to notice you smiling at it.

  5. Trimming & handles

The fiddly, satisfying week — feet, rims, handles that fit an actual thumb. Your keeper gets its finish.

  6. The glaze gamble

You pick from twelve glazes, the kiln fires to 1,260°, and nobody — including us — knows exactly what comes out. Best lottery in town.

Out of the kiln

Recent student work.

All of it made by people who six weeks earlier had never touched a wheel.

The truth
The wheel teaches patience faster than any teacher.
Every potter, eventually

The studio

A warm room that smells of rain.

The Wheel House is an old sail loft — thick walls, big windows, the harbour two streets down. Wet clay smells like weather, the radio stays low, and the kettle is always just boiled.

Course students get an open-studio key evening once a week between classes. That's when the real progress happens: no teacher, one lamp per wheel, and the good kind of quiet.

Ways in

Three doors.

Everything includes clay, glazes, both firings and as much tea as the kettle can manage.

Sworn statements

Week one I called it 'the spinning humiliation machine'. Week six I cried a little at the kiln opening. Both statements accurate.
Jess P.Six Weeks, spring term
My keeper is a slightly drunk-looking mug. I drink from it every morning and feel more proud of it than of my actual degree.
Tom W.Six Weeks graduate
Did the taster on a hen weekend as a joke. I now have a shelf with my name on it and opinions about glaze chemistry.
